I’m a HUGE fan of musicals. My absolute favorite movie growing up was Roger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Not the Brandy/Whitney Houston remake, but the old 1965 stage version. My Cinderella outfit was a ratty brown hand-me-down with a handkerchief on my head. I would dance around the house with a broom, singing “In My Own Little Corner.”
I was basically destined to be a theater nerd.
Last night I had a date night with my friend Benny, and we saw Waitress at the Boston Opera House last night. I absolutely love Sara Bareilles, but I wasn’t pumped to see it because I don’t like the trend of creating musicals from movies. Plus I didn’t love the movie when I saw it. Needless to say, I had very low expectations going into it, and I was pleasantly very surprised. I enjoyed every minute.
The show was fun but had some serious themes. The acting was great, the singing was near acrobatic at times, and I really appreciated how the set changes were complicated but transitioned seamlessly. I’ve been listening to the soundtrack nonstop today. The music definitely has the Sara Bareilles all over it, and I love that. There are so many great female songs in my range to add to my shower singing playlist.
I had a wonderful time geeking out about musicals with Benny, and totally worth the lack of sleep.
TGIF!
